About Dr. Schlinger, Therapist in Davis, CA
Welcome! My name is Jonathan Schlinger (please feel free to call me Jon or Dr. Schlinger as well, no preference). I am a licensed clinical psychologist with a history of working in the mental health field since 2013. I have worked with predominantly adults, but also children and adolescents from a wide variety of backgrounds in numerous settings including in county mental health, schools, private practices, and university settings.
As an intern and postdoctoral resident at the UC Davis, I revived the Men's Group, affording male-identified students the opportunity to explore how their gender, culture, and history impacted their relationships with others, as well as help them work towards improving their capacities to be vulnerable and relate to others at a deeper level. I also facilitated several weekly workshops helping provide students with practical skills for coping with anxiety as well. In addition, I reformatted the Building Social Confidence group to incorporate a more mindfulness-based approach. My work at UC Davis granted me the opportunity to work with and learn from students from varying backgrounds, including international students, students navigating chronic medical conditions, law students, and veterinary students.
I obtained my doctoral degree in clinical psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University, Sacramento, providing me with further experience in working with both the general public and individuals with more specific struggles or life circumstances. This included conducting neuropsychological assessments and therapy for those recovering from traumatic brain injuries, individuals with suspected dementia, as well as those with chronic pain. In addition, I worked in community mental health with individuals exploring and establishing their gender identities and often co-occurring trauma. These experiences have continually inspired me to challenge myself and grow as both an individual and a therapist.
Prior to working in the mental health field, I went to UCLA and majored in Philosophy. After spending a semester in a graduate program in Philosophy, I decided it was lacking the interpersonal connection and excitement I was seeking in my work. I found that therapy allowed me to continue to explore my intellectual curiosity while also forming deep relationships which others and bearing witness to their growth. I have not looked back since. When I am not doing clinical work, you will likely find me cooking, working on my chops as an aspiring guitarist, watching Giants Baseball, or spending time with my wife, child, dog, and two cats. I look forward to speaking with you!
