I offer long-term individual counseling for numerous concerns and needs. Regardless of your presenting issues, I see our relationship as the most important factor for helping you achieve your goals. When we feel supported, understood (often used colloquially as "resonating" with each other), and compassionately challenged, healing occurs over time at the level of the brain, promoting long-term change. At times, we will not be in sync with one other. This offers additional opportunities for growth through subsequently clarifying misunderstandings, respecting individual differences, and coming to understand the role of both parties in our interactions, helping us reconnect and resonate with one another once again.
Consistent with research in psychology and neuroscience over the past several decades, emotion has risen to the forefront as as a key indicator of well being. When we are able to adaptively connect to our emotions, manage them effectively, and use them as guideposts to living authentically, we are more able to live meaningful, connected, fulfilling lives. As such, some of our work will involve helping you increase your awareness of and ability to manage and healthily utilize your emotions in and out of session. This will often involve helping you connect with what you are experiencing in the present moment at a deeper level.
An important aspect of well being also involves being able to understand our history and culture and how that has shaped who we are now and the choices we make. While many fear therapy will result in needless dwelling on the past, understanding the history of those parts of us we value and those parts we hope to change is a crucial part of the path towards mental well-being and change in the present, helping us stop history from repeating itself when it does not serve our needs. As such, our meetings will also involve helping you make sense of your past.
Regardless of your presenting concerns, I see our work as wholly collaborative, with you as the expert in your own life and experience and myself as a guide to help you take responsibility for your life and move towards the changes you desire. As such, I will frequently ask for feedback to make sure you feel that you are getting your needs met or if you seek changes in the counseling process.
I provide therapy for a wide range of presenting issues, including anxiety, interpersonal/relationship concerns, grief, major life changes (such as life-threatening illness, divorce, graduation, career change), attachment difficulties/trauma, depression, personal growth, loneliness/isolation, death anxiety, gender identity, sexual orientation, men's issues, work/school challenges, self-esteem, traumatic brain injuries, and identity concerns.
Sessions cost $190, are conducted online or in person, are 50 minutes long, and typically occur once per week but may be more frequent depending on presenting concerns and goals. Fees are offered on a sliding scale on a case-by-case basis, depending on your needs. I offer a 15-minute phone consultation prior to our meeting. This serves to address your hopes for counseling, ways I may or may not be able to help, and to determine whether we would be a good fit for therapy together. If we decide to meet, we will set up an initial consultation, either in person or through telehealth. If either of us does not think we would be a good fit, I can help provide appropriate referrals to other providers.
Group therapy offers individuals unique opportunities and experiences that go above and beyond what is possible in individual therapy. First, it provides a sense of universality, helping individuals feel less alone in their struggles and establishing a comforting and safe sense of community. Additionally, and more specifically, my groups, which are known as process groups, serve as a kind of social experiment where individuals can try out new behaviors and ways of relating to others in a safe, contained environment; it also helps individual's better grasp how the are perceived by, influence, and are influenced by others within the group. The group setting can be an excellent context for working through underlying issues driving symptoms of anxiety and depression. Indeed, research shows that group therapy is the preferred treatment for certain types of anxiety, depression, isolation, anger, and intimacy issues. I have seen some of the most profound changes in others through the group process.
Existential Process Group (Coming Fall 2025): This group is for individuals ages 18 and older from all backgrounds seeking to understand themselves and their relationships with others at a deeper level; to form real live connections and create a sense of vitality in the present moment. It is a space for group members to better understand their impact on others and to try on new ways of being, connecting with, and relating to others that may have been unsafe or entirely foreign in one’s family upbringing. Group members will have the opportunity to explore, seek support, and work through various struggles and challenges including anxiety, depression, anger, relationships, identity, loneliness and isolation, death/loss, emotional expression and communication, meaning, and more. While support is one component of the group, emphasis is placed on helping members learn how to take healthy risks, more effectively share their emotional experiences, and communicate their needs in real time with other group members.
